The sixth phase of the lunar cycle; occurs between the Full Moon and the last quarter Moon. The waning phases represent the Moon becoming less illuminated.
Illumination is the percentage of the lunar surface visible from Earth that is illuminated by the Sun. by the Sun. During a full moon it is 100%, and during a new moon it is 0%.
The Moon's orbit is elliptical. The distance to the Earth changes throughout the month and ranges from approximately approximately between 356,500 km and 406,700 km.
