The importance of hurricane insurance

In this episode of Atmospheric Turbulence, I invite you to take off with me on a different flight: one where foresight and responsibility are as important as weather forecasts. I always say: not everything depends on the hurricane, it also depends on what you do before it.. Preparing yourself with the right information - and the right insurance - can make the difference between recovering or losing everything.

Accompanied by my friend and colleague, the meteorologist and oceanographer Eduardo Rodriguez, In this issue, we explore a topic that is rarely talked about in the media: the world of the hurricane insurance. Eduardo explains very clearly why the hurricane insurance and flood insurance are not the same thing, and how many people believe they are covered when in reality they only have half the protection. We also look at costs, deductibles and how insurers determine risk on a county-by-county or coastal region basis.

Later on, we shared data that shocked me personally: only a few years ago, the 4 % of households in vulnerable areas have flood insurance, and in Houston, just 15 %. We discussed why many families choose not to insure themselves, and how major disasters such as Andrew o Harvey changed mindsets and policies across the United States.

In the second part Yuri, The insurance expert, to broaden the conversation beyond the material. With her, we talked about how insurance also protects the physical, emotional and financial health during and after a hurricane. Yuri explains what supplementary insurance -and how they can help you if you lose income, suffer an injury or if your family faces a difficult situation.

I close the episode with some very practical advice: keep digital and physical copies of your policies, Keep your documents in the cloud or with someone you trust, and remember that the resilience does not only depend on the walls of your home., but also your financial decisions.
