How to prepare for, respond to and recover from floods

Why should you prepare?

Floods represent an important constant threat throughout the yearfrom the east coast to the Pacific islands. Many times they occur suddenly and in areas that are not even receiving rain at the time.

 Knowing what to do before, during and after a flood can save your life and protect your assets.

Flood warnings: learn how to differentiate between them

To understand the meaning of each type of notice from the National Weather Service (NWS) is the key to timely action:

Before the flood: how to prepare?

Know your risk

  • Do you live in a flood zone? Consult maps at floodsmart.gov

2. Family communication plan

  • Establishes contact outside the area
  • Define a safe meeting point

3. Minimum emergency kit (3 days)

  • Water, non-perishable foodstuffs, medicines, etc.
  • Battery-powered radio, flashlights, blankets, boots and waterproof gloves
  • Portable chargers and spare batteries
  • Important documents in sealed bag

4. Prepare your home

  • Install check valves in drains
  • Check the operation of your sump pump
  • Use sandbags if possible
  • Ensures coverage with a flood insurance (may take 30 days to activate!)

During flooding: what to do to stay safe

If you are at home

  • Evacuate if it is possible and safe to do so
  • Turn off electricity and gas if you have time
  • Never enter areas where water covers plugs or cables.

If you are in a vehicle

  • Never cross flooded roadsonly 30 cm of water can wash away a car
  • Turn Around, Don't Drown (Turn around, don't drown)

If you are walking

  • Completely avoid the water: only 15 cm of moving water can knock you down.
  • Climb to a high place and call 911 if you are trapped

After the flood: recovering safely

Safety first

  • Do not enter flooded buildings until you receive the approval of the authorities.
  • Beware of collapsed floors, unstable ceilings and gas leaks.

Contaminated water

  • Stagnant water may contain toxic waste, sewage and sharp objects
  • Never use generators indoors (danger of carbon monoxide poisoning).

  • Inform your family that you are well
