Accompanied by my friend and colleague, the meteorologist and oceanographer Eduardo Rodriguez<\/strong>, In this issue, we explore a topic that is rarely talked about in the media: the world of the hurricane insurance<\/strong>. Eduardo explains very clearly why the hurricane insurance and flood insurance are not the same thing<\/strong>, and how many people believe they are covered when in reality they only have half the protection. We also look at costs, deductibles and how insurers determine risk on a county-by-county or coastal region basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later on, we shared data that shocked me personally: only a few years ago, the 4 % of households in vulnerable areas<\/strong> have flood insurance, and in Houston, just 15 %<\/strong>. We discussed why many families choose not to insure themselves, and how major disasters such as Andrew<\/strong> o Harvey<\/strong> changed mindsets and policies across the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yuri explains what supplementary insurance<\/strong> -and how they can help you if you lose income, suffer an injury or if your family faces a difficult situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
