🌵 Drought Monitor Levels
The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) classifies drought in five levels based on impacts on vegetation, soils, crops and water supplies. The darker the color on the map, the more severe the drought.
| Level | Description | Typical impact |
|---|---|---|
| D0 | Abnormally Dry | Slowed planting, growth of crops and pastures |
| D1 | Moderate Drought | Some damage to crops, voluntary water restrictions |
| D2 | Severe Drought | Crop loss, water restrictions |
| D3 | Extreme Drought | Major crop losses, water shortages |
| D4 | Exceptional Drought | Exceptional losses, water emergencies |
