🌵 Drought Monitor Levels

The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) classifies drought in five levels based on impacts on vegetation, soils, crops and water supplies. The darker the color on the map, the more severe the drought.

Level Description Typical impact
D0 Abnormally Dry Slowed planting, growth of crops and pastures
D1 Moderate Drought Some damage to crops, voluntary water restrictions
D2 Severe Drought Crop loss, water restrictions
D3 Extreme Drought Major crop losses, water shortages
D4 Exceptional Drought Exceptional losses, water emergencies
